Back in the saddle again.

When Matt asked me to be an artist at quiet Speaks, my blood pressure went up and I started sweating. Thank goodness, i was wearing deodorant.
I hadn’t been on stage in over 6 months.
What if I didn’t know how to act anymore. What if I threw up. What if?  I told him to let me …

Notes from the Barnstorm

Last weekend, quiet partnered with two other non-profit arts organizations (The Heroes and Rainy Night Productions) to present Barnstorm: The Cabaret Re-Imagined.  Together, the three organizations transformed an empty storefront in Downtown Seattle into a bar, performance space, and art gallery.  Over three nights, hundreds of people came through for great food and drinks, thought-provoking …

quiet Acts: Exploring Femininity

Sunday night I sat in on the first reading for our latest production, quiet Acts – an evening of one-act plays that opens June 1.  I am so excited about our latest theatrical project, and hearing our actors dive into their first read-through was absolutely fantastic.
The evening will feature The Other Woman, by Casey Kelly, …

quiet Speaks and quiet Shorts – Two Celebrations of Artists, Their Art, and the Possibility of Change

When we first began quiet, back in 2004, we were very explicit with the fact that we wanted to be forming a multi-disciplinary arts community.  We didn’t just want to be about theatre, or music, or the written word – but we wanted the organization we were forming to encompass any …

Catherine Cabeen’s “Highly Opinionated Tour” of Nick Cave at SAM

As part of Crystallizing Space, Catherine Cabeen, one of Seattle’s most brilliant dancer/choreographers, offered a tour of Nick Cave’s “Meet Me at the Center of the Universe,” in order to discuss kinesthetic movement, unsexing, and identity.
Nick Cave’s Soundsuits work to achieve anonymity, or rather a sense of “safety,” by fully concealing the person within it. “There’s …

A Comic Tragedy: Final Reflections on “The Taming of the Shrew”

It’s been a week since we closed our production of The Taming of the Shrew, and I’ve spent the last few days reflecting on the play, our performances, and the entire process of putting this production together.  The audience response was especially intriguing.  Shrew is typically performed as a broad comedy, brimming with slapstick humor …

The Taming of the Shrew – Performance Response

With our production of The Taming of the Shrew set to open this Friday, we wanted to create a venue for dialogue that goes beyond our panel discussions and the usual post-performance chit-chat.  With that in mind, we’re setting up space on the blog for your thoughts and comments about our performance of The Taming …

Of Man Men and Shrews

The new year has begun and we’re getting ready to launch into our second blocks of rehearsals for quiet‘s upcoming production of The Taming of the Shrew, set amidst the whiskey-soaked chauvinism of early 1960.  As we were thinking of established plays to produce for our season-long examination of issues surrounding gender, Shrew seemed like …
